Movies from the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die – List have a *
1) My Man Godfrey (1936) *
Fast talking. But it was a nice movie, though I thought the end was a bit too fast. I would have liked it to be 10 or 20 minutes longer. But then again this family is so crazy it deserves a crazy end^^
2) Jezebel (1938)*
Not bad but also not very exiting.
3) Ninotchka (1939)*
A really nice story but I liked Ninotchka better when they first met XD
4) Wuthering Heights (1939)*
Way better then I thought! I loved all the characters and the storytelling element to move the story forward. It is dramatic and does have some small surprises. A good movie.
5) Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht (1979)* Nosferatu the Vampyre
This movie is so boring. and it’s so sad because the 1922′s version (Nosferatu, Eine Symphonie Des Grauens / Nosferatu, A Symphony Of Terror) is great. Beautiful acting and the horror is so intense but here I thought the actors were half asleep and I didn’t care at all what happens to the people.
6) Rocky (1976)*
Absolutely great. I feared it would be a typical American Dream movie but it’s refreshingly different. I quite like how Adrian changed due to Rocky’s influence and how he struggles with this so called opportunity and resolves it.
7) Cool Hand Luke (1967)*
Paul Newman! Good movie with good acting and a testimony of its time in the metaphoric story.
8) This Is Spinal Tap (1984)*
I would have highly enjoyed this movie if I could stand people who make fools of themselves. But I don’t like it, fictional or not.
9) Top Gun (1986)*
I can see why my friend likes it so much. air planes and hot half naked guys *lol* It’s a nice movie but also a rather typical one. The most interesting thing for me is the homosexual subtext here.
10) Children of a Lesser God (1986)*
Very nice movie, that surprisingly did not get boring as it progresses.
11) Reversal of Fortune (1990)*
nice storytelling
12) Romper Stomper (1992)*
Brutal. If you like movies with “troubled teenagers” then you might like that movie.
13) On the Waterfront (1954)*
I couldn’t get attached to this movie, so it was rather boring albeit it is well done.
14) The X Files: I Want to Believe (2008)
It was nice to get back to Mulder/Scully after the last seasons of the show. The movie felt like a double episode – which I think is positive.
15) Battlestar Galactica: The Plan (2009)
Only something for fans because the whole movie feels like deleted smashed together
16) Amarcord (1973) * I Remember
Not bad but I kinda missed the story *lol*
17) Secrets & Lies (1996)*
I really like the story. But I can’t hear the word “sweetheart” anymore after this XD
18) Magnolia (1999)*
First it was a bit confusing but I really liked the movie in the end. Interesting, sad, tragic.
19) Jacob’s Ladder (1990)*
Well done movie. Just not my kind of movie.
20) Born of Hope (2009)
Wonderful film, that brings Middle Earth alive – again.
21) MASH (1970)*
poor “hot lips” *lol* but a wonderful movie.
22) The Elephant Man (1980)*
Good movie but also sad.
23) Requiem for a Dream (2000)*
Intense movie due to the technique and story. Well done in that area but not something I enjoy.
24) Da hong deng long gao gao gua (1991)* Raise the Red Lantern
I really enjoyed this movie. It is a tragic story, which also bears deeper meaning in its allusion to life in totalitarianisms
25) My Fair Lady (1964) *
Better then I thought. But I guess I have seen enough movies like that, that I couldn’t enjoy it as much as the movie would deserve it.
26) Gegen die Wand (2004)* Head-On
I liked “Auf der anderen Seite” better but this one is more intense. It was interesting and some of the situations seemed familiar.
27) Inception (2010)
Interesting, complicated, tragic and good end. I like it.
28) The Thing (1982)*
I don’t like horror movies. But I can see why this one is well known. I guess if you like horror you would love this one. I liked the end.
29) Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)*
very cool film. I really liked the two protagonists, they had a great chemistry. And I simply like Western^^
30) Angst essen Seele auf (1974)* Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
I didn’t think this movie would be so good. This one has a serious topic, a love story, some hilarious scenes (those looks!), despair and just a great storytelling. I really liked it, though it’s probably better when watching with other people.
31) Stargate: Continuum (2008)
Not bad but we have seen such things already and it gets boring after a while.
32) Sharpe’s Peril (2008)
Sharpe is back again. It was a more reflective piece then the others yet still Sharpe and I liked it better then Sharpe’s Challenge.
33) Black Narcissus (1947)*
Not what I expected but I liked it very much.
34) The Big Heat (1953)*
Not that bad but I don’t like film noir so it’s not my thing.
35) La maschera del demonio (1960)* Black Sunday
I watched the dubbed version which was a bit out of sync sometimes. But it was alright, though I think if you watch the original they atmosphere would be more intense. The movie itself was good, but I don’t like that scary stuff.
36) Mädchen in Uniform (1931) Girls in Uniform
I understand why it is considered a good and important movie. However it did fail to make me care about the main character. I was more sad when the one girl couldn’t participate in the play then when the main character broke down.
37) Hamlet (2009)
It is a great way to capture the stage play on film. best film version I have seen. Yet I have seen the play with this cast live (twice) and must say it has captured me more. But it is only because Hamlet is written for the stage and not TV. Brilliant film.
38) How Green Was My Valley (1941)*
Good movie, thought I would like to know why he leaves the village at the beginning. The movie showed several themes such as growing up, social situations and economic changes within the storyline in a balanced way.
39) The Band Wagon (1953) *
I think it is not as reflective as Singing in the Rain but it is a nice movie.
40) Masters of the Universe (1987)
It is so weird to see characters I only know from audio plays. Somehow I kept thinking “this would make a good MST3k episode” throughout the movie. I don’t think that’s a good sign *g*
41) Flash Gordon (1980)
I am a fan of the 30s series so this has to come second to it but I am quite surprises that I liked it. It also has some funny lines/scenes that made me laugh quite a few times.
42) Det sjunde inseglet (1957) * The Seventh Seal
Visually beautiful and a very interesting story. I especially like the chess game with death.
43) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)*
I don’t like this version at all. Besides the fact that the version I know has the queen defeated and the apple fallen out of snow whites mouth instead of a magical kiss I can’t stand that typical Disney singing with animals. It makes it all so shiny whereas it’s a brutal story of a princess who is hated, bullied and even murdered by her own (step) mother. Not to mention the loss of her own mother. I also don’t like the artwork much and that random singing.
44) Guys and Dolls (1955)*
I liked the gangster version of an old story of people from different backgrounds fall in love and of a couple where one partner has commitment problems. But aside from that it was just an ordinary movie, which couldn’t get me much excited since I have already seen a lot of those sing/dance love stories types.
45) Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) *
I really don’t get why this is a popular movie. Movies like that were made quite a lot. Granted the songs are even more popular and that to date. But I was bored.
46) Peeping Tom (1960)*
A good movie, which is interesting, scary, awkward and sensational at the same time. I liked how the “photographing” was made into such an intimate yet cold but also natural experience. For the victims but also for Mark himself and of course the audience.
47) The Great Escape (1963)*
I guess it doesn’t help if you have watched Hogan’s Heroes and have to think about it whenever they play that music. However I am rather pleased with the usage of German in this movie. Being German myself I find it rather amusing how it is used in foreign movies most of the time. But here it was rather good (in pronunciation) and well used. One could believe they were Germans and not poor American actors who had to memorize a few German lines.
48) To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)*
OMG he treats black people as equals! Though it is told from the perspectives of the kids and is suppose to be about growing up I am more interested in Atticus. I like his figure, to bad we don’t see him working together with Tom (interesting that everybody in court is addressed with their surname and only the black accused is addressed by his first name). I liked the film but the ending seemed a bit out of place. I guess in the book there is more story to that.
49) Marnie (1964)*
I so hope she’ll get a psychiatrist now. The movie is not bad but somehow it couldn’t captivate me.
50) Thelma & Louise (1991)*
Cool movie.
51) The Defiant Ones (1958)*
I liked this movie. The characters as well the the relationship between Johnny and Collin seem to grew naturally. It wasn’t rushed nor forced. I also liked the Sheriff who became more pressing without leaving his ideals.
52) Sideways (2004)*
I liked the movie, though in the middle I thought it could have another segment added to make it more interesting.
53) Vampyr (1932)*
I liked the movie especially for the mood it sets and the weirdness that only arises through the picture (and story line) but also because you only see location shots but the sound is from studio recording. However I have to admit that I didn’t get everything especially with the two “ghosts” and when he has died. Never the less a good movie.
54) Mon Oncle (1958)* My Uncle
After most French films I state that I don’t like French films. And this one is no different. I think you probably could like it a lot because it’s not a bad movie in itself. It makes fun of the modernization mania in a satiric way, which I can recognize as a good piece of work but sadly it rather annoys then amuses me.
55) Short Cuts (1993)*
Entertaining.
56) The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976)*
I couldn’t get into it much even though it was not a bad movie at all.
57) The Last Seduction (1994)*
I thought it was rather boring, which has nothing to do with the cast, which was great. I especially liked Bill Pullman.
58) The Heiress (1949)*
I real enjoyed the movie even though it was kinda predictable. But I like it when characters mature in that way.
59) Dog Star Man (1962)*
I don’t get this film. If I hadn’t read a bit about it I wouldn’t even know what it is about. There are a lot of visual impressions but I personally don’t like fast cuts and no *real* plot.
60) Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan (1959) Ghost Story of Yotsuya
Now that is scary to be haunted like the protagonist was. I don’t like horror movies usually but I liked this one because I could imagine that such images (seen for real or as mental images) can be highly tormenting.
61) The Crying Game (1992)*
I really enjoyed it with all its new developments. I liked the main characters and their relation to each other.
62) Glory (1989)*
I don’t really like (American) war movies especially not about the Civil War but I liked this one. Maybe because I like Cary Elwes but probably because it was interesting and different from the usual war movie. Sure it includes the pride as soldier and the will to fight (something I cannot understand) but it wasn’t overly patriotic or about equal rights. The balance between those two topics as well as the character and plot development was just right.
63) La meglio gioventú (2003)* The Best of Youth
This movie is long. Very long (6 hours) but at no point I was bored or wished the movie would be over soon. Interesting, well made, great cast and a joy to watch.
64) All That Jazz (1979)*
A wonderfully done movie/musical. Though it felt like we could have explored more about his relationships with the mother of his child, I think it makes me feel as if he had left behind some things. As people do when they die.
65) Love my Life (2006)
Nice movie about love and personal growth. I liked the two main actresses and how the story explored in the first half one and in the second half the other woman’s story without abandoning the other character or the relationship between those two.
66) Nagisa no shindobaddo (1995) Like grains of sand
The story itself is interesting but sadly the movie couldn’t transport the emotions and thoughts of the main cast very well. Because of that the movie is rather boring.
67) Le Mépris (1963)* Contempt
I didn’t like it. Maybe because I didn’t get the couple at all.
68) Percy Jackson & the Olympians The Lightning Thief (2010)
A nice movie to relax with. The mix between modern world and old Greek mythology was just right to make an entertaining action adventure.
69) The Unknown (1927)*
What a great movie. This movie had it all: Love, Hate, a criminal in hiding, an armless person with two arms and three thumbs, overcoming of fear and just the right amount of text inserted. The acting was really good that you didn’t need much, which is always good because the pictures should speak for themselves as much as possible.
70) Koyaanisqatsi (1983)*
Not my kind of movie.
71) Windprint (1990)
Interesting film, nice characters and yummy Sean Bean^^
73) Black Death (2009)
I really liked how they turned the table on the Christians. Doing to them what they did to “unbelievers” and also how one could use people in despair in order to gain power. Well done movie, though nothing for people who cannot watch cruelty nasty things.
73) Small Zones (1990)
Interesting having two stories like that side by side, separate yet interlinked.
74) Les Vampires (1915)* The Vampires
A really good movie serial/series, which could also be adapted into a modern tv series. I’d love to see that. The story was interesting with many turns and twists. Though every episode was like a movie itself they were all connected, which gave the whole serial the opportunity to tell different stories with an over all story arc. We do discover more and more about the gang of the vampires, yet we can be surprised by their actions, which range from kidnapping, killing and even coming back from the dead. On the side of “Good” in this Good vs Evil tale, we have star reporter Guérande and his sidekick Mazamette, who hunt the vampires down but in turn become their pray. Each side plots against and deceives the other.
This movies are exciting, interesting, surprising and have a wonderful score. Most of the time I don’t pay much attention to the music but this being a silent film it becomes even more important to the audience. The themes really help to get into the movie. All in all a very good movie serial/series. I can only recommend it.
75) Nihon igai zenbu chinbotsu (2006) The World sinks except Japan
I really don’t know if I like this movie or not. It’s rather a B-movie yet it is very amusing because of it (and all that very bad Japanese is just hilarious on its own). And it also has some serious issues where non of the portrait are looking good. Neither the foreigners, who are apparently all criminals and push-overs, nor the Japanese who are very prejudice and don’t tread the foreigners as human beings.
76) Nae meorisokui jiwoogae (2004) A Moment to Remember
Beautiful yet sad. I really should stop watching movies about Alzheimer’s, I always end up in tears.
77) Krótki film o zabijaniu (1988) a short film about killing
I can see why it is on the Filmkanon but I don’t like it very much. The style of the film was none I liked and the main characters lacked characterisation in my eyes.
78) Rocco e i suoi fratelli (1960)*
Rocco and His Brothers
This movie wasn’t bad but somehow it couldn’t keep my interest for the entire duration. Maybe if it had been shorter, it would have been better.
79) Yuukoku (1966) Patriotism
Very straight forward: A couple that commits Hara-Kiri. Not really much more to tell.
80) Naked Lunch (1991)*
Weird movie. But I somewhat liked it.
81) Le Boucher (1969)* The Butcher
I didn’t find it very interesting.
82) The Lost Future (2010)
Rather predictable and boring. But I guess it’s okay to have it run in the background.
