Movies from the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die – List have a *

1) Taiikukan Baby (2008) Gymnasium Baby
I have seen better. You hadn’t had time enough to get into the couple and it has too many depressing elements.

2) Tsotsi (2005)*
good movie but kinda predictable. It’s always the same story – and it’s not a happy one :-/

3) Das Rad (2003) [short] Rocks
cool, I love it.

4) Shame No More (1999) [short]
The only fascination is that it “backwards” but for me that’s not really interesting so I didn’t like this movie much. But it’s a nice idea to do it like this.

5) Hana yori dango: Fainaru (2008) Boys Over Flowers: Final
It’s a good ending for the show. it stays true to it and the characters, though I thought that there wasn’t enough development on Makino’s account- but then again that’s also a flaw in the show.

6) Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed (1926) The Adventures of Prince Achmed
awww I really loved it. I like those silhouettes and and the story was interesting (Achmed accidentally finds his brother in law *lol*) and a lot of cute things (i.e. the witch pickpockets the lamp *g*). Great movie and I was impressed I must say, must have been quite a lot of work.

7) The Reader (2008)
not bad, but the book is better (long review here)

8) Valkyrie (2008)
Better then was feared but still a few facts were wrong and they made Stauffenberg too much of a hero.

9) Dead Like Me: Life After Death (2009)
Not bad (after all it’s Dead Like Me) but the show was better. I missed Rube and the “real” Daisy a great deal.

10) Halloween (1978) *
A somewhat pointless movie

11) Captain Blood (1935) *
I liked it.

12) Chun gwong cha sit (1997) * Happy Together
It’s sad but good.

13) Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder (2009)
I liked it, it’s Futurama after all, but the show did have some episodes that were better. It’s as good as the other movies.

14) Heat (1995)*
Good movie, though it didn’t really touch me.

15) Some Like It Hot (1959)*
“I’m a man!” “Well, nobody’s perfect.” *g* This movie is so much fun!

16) Apocalypse Now (1979) *
Wow. well done and so insane. One should watch it.

17) Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse (1991) *
Very interesting

18) The Big Red One (1980) *
A good movie, I really liked it though it’s actually nasty as war is.

19) Gaslight (1944)*
Scary. That poor woman! I like the movie, but the end was a bit too fast.

20) Lolita (1962)*
I expected much more from the movie. Like this it was rather boring.

21) Airplane! (1980) *
no big laughs but still funny.

22) Zéro de conduite: Jeunes diables au collège (1933)* [short] Zero for Conduct
Well done but not my kind of film

23) Sukiyaki Western Django (2007)
hilarious! I enjoyed it so much. Japanese people speaking English and the way of Japanese movie making mixed with a very American theme – the Western – is simply great.

24) Minna no ie (2001) All About Our House
I loved Koki Mitani’s Uchôten hoteru and Rajio no jikan, so I expected rather much from Minna no ie but it turned out to be a rather ordinary movie hence my disappointment. It’s not bad but predictable and therefore boring for me.

25) The Last Picture Show (1971) *
I felt like a person from that town: bored. Maybe you have to be American to be interested in that sort of thing.

26) Akira (1988) *
I was unimpressed. The story contains too much that you could properly explore it in a 2 hour movie. It left me rather detached and bored upon the massive display of violence.

27) The Thin Red Line (1998)*
Well done but I probably have seen too many war movies that it couldn’t move me. I thought it was rather boring at times when you could anticipate what would happen next.

28) Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)
Not a really interesting story. Except for Tony Head I was bored.

29) Za majikku awâ (2008) The Magic Hour
brilliant! a movie in a movie that isn’t a movie but desperate plan. Koki Mitani is just great here, I love this small unimportant details that crack me up.

30) Antique (2008)
A really nice movie and against my fears just as good as the anime. The only thing that I didn’t like was that black smoke or whatever that was.

31) Ba wang bie ji (1993)* Farewell My Concubine
An interesting movie, though I don’t know either why the concubine has to die :P

32) Céline et Julie vont en bateau (1974)* Celine and Julie Go Boating
For a French movie not so bad. But I still don’t like those kind of movies.

33) Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984)
Not a bad movie but it feels more like a summery to the book and I missed the important feeling of normality and the whole process of how Winston’s conversion came way to short. I loved the “reasoning” that happend in the book.

34) Giant (1956)*
Good and interesting movie. Just a bit long ;)

35) Monsters vs Aliens (2009)
Nice movie, good for a Saturday afternoon.

36) Drowning by Numbers (1988)*
Strange and confusing movie but interesting. Plus Bernhard Hill ♥

37) Star Trek (2009)
A good movie. Yes it does have plot-holes and there are some things that are controversy (Uhura/Spock, Spock+Emotions, exploding Vulcan&Romulus,…) But over all it’s a good movie, which entertains maybe involuntarily but still it was better then I had feared and you shouldn’t forget that the other Star Trek movies and Series weren’t perfect either. If it introduced new people to Star trek then it has served it purpose and besides yummy eyecandy, comedy and neat special effects. Just don’t expect too much, it’s just a movie for entertaining after all.

38) Babes in Arms (1939)*
Nice and entertaining movie.

39) Harold and Maude (1971)*
A good movie. I had a lot of fun watching it.

40) Blackmail (1929)*
The dubbing of the polish actress wasn’t as bad as I thought, but the end left me a bit unsatisfied because not much really happened. The inspector didn’t have an inner struggle whether or not to turn her in and she was convinced very quickly not to turn confess.

41) To Be or Not To Be (1942)*
great, absolutely great! I can’t describe it because you simply have to see it. Funny and serious, true and so over the top. I loved every minute.

42) Rushmore (1998)*
Not bad but I didn’t get into it much.

43) Faces (1968)*
Well done but for this movie you have to have a certain mood/concentration I didn’t have.

44) Love Me Tonight (1932)*
nice movie, I just didn’t like the singing because it seemed not natural.

45) Olympia 1. Teil – Fest der Völker (1938)* Olympia Part One: Festival of the Nations
Olympia 2. Teil – Fest der Schönheit (1938)* Olympia: The Film of the XI. Olympic Games, Part II
(info: I count them as one film because on the 1001 movie list it’s counted as one)
Wow. simply wow. beautiful pictures and very exciting. I felt like I would watch it live. Leni Riefenstahl did such great work.

46) The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)*
A bit slow moving, but it’s very well done. Poor veterans.

47) Antares (2004)
Well done, but it’s not a film for me so that it was rather boring.

48) La Strada (1954) * The Road
I don’t know what I should think about this movie. It was good yes but it left a strange feeling. I’m not sad but I would liked it to end another way even though I know it couldn’t.

49) Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma (1975) * Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom
Its intention is to shock and that it does. Nothing for the faint hearted.

50) Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) *
Somehow Willy Wonker could be the Doctor in my eyes *lol* Nice movie but a bit too childish for my taste.

51) The Hustler (1961)*
It’s not a nice story.. everybody is a looser. That’s not good for my mood ;)

52) Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965)*
good movie….except the wrong people survived :P

53) A Hard Day’s Night (1964)*
I’m not a fan of the Beatles and this movie was just boring.

54) Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009)
Nice movie, but I still like the first one best.

55) A Gentlemen’s Duel (2006) [short]
Not a bad idea and good animation.

56) Chelovek s kino-apparatom (1929)* The Man With The Movie Camera
Very interesting. Not the people but how it was a film and a making-of at the same time.

57) Hitlerjunge Salomon (1990)* Europa Europa
As the brother said: such a story would no one believe. I liked the movie a lot though I wished we had seen a bit more of an insight in “Jupp’s feelings

58) The Hunt for Gollum (2009) [short]
Great. Wonderful. May I have some more please?

59) Judgment at Nuremberg (1961)
Great film for its time. I enjoyed it very much.

60) Indien (1993) India
Great Austrian movie! Everything between “Ich mach’ jetzt ‘ne Kiwidiät – alles außer Kiwi” or “Warum bin ich ein Mensch geworden und ein anderer a Hendl?” It’s funny but also emotionally.

61) Takumi-kun: Soshite harukaze ni sasayaite (2007)
I like the story and the characters but the movie progresses too fast due to its runtime. They should have made it longer

62) Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006) *
I didn’t think I would like this movie but I did. It’s so absurd but true at the same time. I think it’s great how the Americans embarrass themselves *lol*

63) Akihabara@DEEP (2006)
I didn’t like the movie, maybe because I loved the TV show so much. They left out a character, changed the existing ones not in a good way and it didn’t feel like the @deep group at all :-(

64) Takumi-kun: Nijiiro no garasu (2009)
i liked this movie better then the first one since I got better into the charcters and we have two storyline to follow both are told in a good pace and to the viewers satisfaction.

65) Nuit et brouillard (1955)* Night and Fog [short]
I have seen many movies and documentaries about the holocaust but this short film shook me up intensively. A very good piece of work.

66) Bin-jip (2004)* 3-Iron
Intense, beautiful, puzzling, interesting and a very good movie altogether.

67) Withnail & I (1987)*
Not my kin dof movie, I found it rather boring. Though I liked Paul McGann’s performance

68) Wickie und die starken Männer (2009) Vicky the Viking
When I first heard about this film I had my doubt that it would be good. I grew up watching the cartoon version of the books and after the rather disappointing projects of Hui Bui and Asterix at the Olympics I was even more sceptical that it could be a good adaptation. But I was rather curious so I did watch this movie. I was rather surprised that it was not as bad as I thought. The story is well done and I like the cast. I just think it would be better if the jokes would be more out of context and not expected. It is way funnier is a overall serious movie does jokes then a movie that doesn’t take itself serious. This is something I feel could have made better. And I don’t think they would have needed Lee Fu and certainly not Ramon Martinez Congaz. Over all not that bad if you like that kind of humour but definitely not a must-see. Maybe something to watch if there is nothing else on.

69) Dangerous Liaisons (1988)*
A nice move, but I like the remake “cruel intentions” better, maybe because I don’t like that time period in this one?

70) An Affair to Remember (1957)*
Somehow this 50s Lovestories cannot reach me. I liked her though.

71) Smoke (1995)*
Interesting and a movie I really enjoyed.

72) Die Hard (1988)*
I don’t see why people make such a big deal out of this. Sure it was one of the better action films but besides Alan Rickman and the two policemen building a relationship over the radio it was not not a film I had to see more then once.

73) Far North (2007)
It’s such a WTF movie. The end was.. well creepy.

74) The Killing Fields (1984)*
Very good movie. I was drawn into it and felt with the characters and people.

75) Into the Wild (2007)*
The movie was nice but a) that guy is stupid doing this without proper knowledge (okay fault of the person not the film that follows his story) and b) this movie was too long for that that the other characters didn’t get much depth.

76) Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989)*
Mmh, I didn’t find it very interesting except for the last part.

77) Ben-Hur (1959)*
A good movie, even though it is a bit too long.

78) The Servant (1963)*
wow. such a contrast between beginning and end. Love it. Great movie.

79) Bleach: The Diamond Dust Rebellion (2007)
It wasn’t bad but it’s just like a filler arc and not as good as the main story of Bleach.

80) Bleach: Fade to Black (2008)
tragic *sniff* But this seemed to be all over the place with the story. But it has nice Byakuya moments^^

81) Touch of Evil (1958)*
I don’t like Film Noir so I was rather bored by this.

82) Terminator Salvation (2009)
What’s the point of putting people in danger if you already know that they will survive? There is only a point if you have good characters and an emotional journey. As this is mainly an action movie I can overlook this but I felt that the action was not as well placed as in Terminator 1 or 2 so the lack of depth was more obvious to me. John Connor and Marcus had great potential but were distracted by their love interest, which weren’t interesting and probably better be left out. All in all not bad but it could have been better.

83) Veronika Decides to Die (2009)
It should be said I didn’t like the book, I found or rather boring. not the story itself but how it was written. I like the movie better then the book. Sarah Michelle Gellar was good in her role but there were a few changes I was sad they did: They changed location to America (understandable) and they didn’t explore some other characters besides the main couple (one thing they mostly do). I do not hold that against the movie, but one thing I do is that they change in Veronika was too sudden for me. She was all better after that piano night. I would have wished for a transition in smaller steps. Maybe a few more inside thought from the off. I think it is a good adaptation but for “die hard fans” of the book it probably isn’t.

84) L’eclisse (1962) *
I a somewhat indifferent about this movie. It wasn’t bad – I liked the stock market and that there was no additional music – but it was also boring. But maybe that’s what the movie intended since the characters seems to feel exactly the same.

85) Samson and Delilah (1985) [short]
Interesting. But somehow it’s again such a movie where I think afterwards “and what was that for?”.
