-> Innovative Language Learning
As you have probably seen I put in links for Japanesepod101, EnglishClass101 and Germanpod101 in my link list. These three belong to a mother company namely Innovative Language Learning and there are a lot of languages featured and probably more to come.
The system works like this: you have one lesson a week (per series, like All About Mondays, Survival Phrases Tuesday, lower intermediate Wednesdays, …) for free. No costs. You can even have rss or media feeds (i.e. in iTunes) for the updates. The lessons feature a dialogue in native speed, then slowly and then with English translation. You have native hosts as well as native English speaking hosts. One of each most of the time. Then you have a cultural point in the lesson, where you learn about the culture and how/when the phrases you just learned are used.
Then you have 3 types of subscriptions – depending on what you want. Those are not cheap, I must warn you, but as I bought a premium membership for Japanesepod101 I can tell you it is worth it if you really want to learn the language. I was around that site for a year or so before I bought it. I listened to the lessons and it was nice. I did learn a few things. Sadly the content is only available for a short period of time for non-paying users. But you can download the audio (or video) onto your computer and store it yourself. With iTunes it’s even easier.
I will just talk about the main features and those which work best for me. There is more and you can find the list on the sitel. As I said, there are three kinds of subscription: Basic, Premium and Premium Plus. Basic is really basic, you get all the lessons plus the lesson’s pdfs with notes, grammar point and kanji learning sheet. With Premium you of course get what you have with Basic and the so called Learning Center, which in my eyes is really helpful. I often use it to look some things up in the dictionary or look at a grammar point. You also have lesson specific questions and vocabulary flashcards. Or you can learn kana and kanji. Very useful. But what I love the most are the review and conversation tracks of a lesson. You can play them over and over again to get better at listening comprehension or to learn the vocabulary that way. The PremiumPlus gets you more like a one on one session with a teacher but I think you are good with a Premium unless you are on a time schedule and have to get good really fast.
Germanpod101 is not (yet) as good as JapanesePod101 in my opinion. If it is something for you, you have to decide for yourself by trying out the free features (and 7-day trial membership). I think it’s okay.
EnglishClass101 is learning English in English (EnglishPod101 is in Japanese). This is a bit hard because you have to have at least some knowledge to be able to study there. So far the only interesting thing for me are the Buzzword lessons, I really like them, and the Audio Blogs. So far they don’t have advanced lessons but I will keep an eye on that site and they said they are planning on advanced lessons.

-> Anki

This is a program that lets you create and manage flashcards on your computer. This also has a video guide that explains very good what you can do with it.
I use it with a Japanese plug-in so that the Kanji are automatically get Furigana reading in the answer. Also you can download not only free plug-ins but also free decks someone else created. There are Decks free for all to download or if you do study with a partner and want to share a deck you can do this via share key, which you put in as source for your deck.
Feedback (good or bad) is appreciated. :)
explanation to the “status”. First it says it’s online or offline. Online means you can download it via Anki. Offline means you have to use the ShareKey in order to get it into Anki. I made it like that so the unfinished decks can be updated automatically.
Second is either complete or on-going. complete means the series is finished and I “only” have to type up the information whereas on-going means there still will be more new information released.
The last is Work-In-Progress and means I am working on the deck. I am going to make new cards.

Decks I created:

1) JapanesePod101.com – All About
status: online | complete
Obviously a deck for my studies at JapanesePod101.com
This deck contains the information from the All About series from JapanesePod101.com
This Deck contains vocabulary in Kana/Kanji with reading and the English translation. But there are a lot of Japanese cultural questions too. I tried to get as many information as I could but I couldn’t get everything into a flashcards question/answer format. But it should be sufficient to read the pdf once to get the rest.
